A literature review of homeopathic materia medica for skin disease
Monoj Kumar Deka and Umesh Shaw
Skin disorders represent a significant share of the global disease burden, encompassing a diverse range of aetiologies including autoimmune, infectious, inflammatory, allergic, and psychosomatic factors. While conventional dermatology focuses on symptomatic relief through allopathic medicines, alternative systems such as homeopathy emphasize individualized care grounded in constitutional types, miasmatic theory, and mind-body balance. Skin diseases constitute a significant portion of chronic morbidity worldwide, calling for holistic and sustainable management strategies.
This literature review synthesizes core insights from classical and contemporary homeopathic Materia medica to explain therapeutic approaches for dermatological conditions. Emphasizing foundational principles such as the law of similars, totality of symptoms, and miasmatic theory (psora, sycosis, syphilis), Drawing upon texts by Hahnemann, Kent, Clarke, Allen, and Vithoulkas, this article positions homeopathy as a mind-body integrative system aligned with psychosomatic dermatology. The review concludes that individualized homeopathic prescribing, when informed by miasmatic insight and constitutional assessment, holds therapeutic potential for long-term remission and quality-of-life improvement in patients with chronic skin diseases.
