Abstract:

Enset (Ensete ventricosum), often termed the "false banana," is an important staple crop in Ethiopia, contributing significantly to food security in the highland regions. Beyond its role in food, enset also plays a crucial role in traditional medicine, particularly in homeopathic remedies. This paper explores the post-harvest practices involved in preparing enset for medicinal use. From fermentation to storage and preparation for specific medicinal applications, these traditional practices have been passed down through generations. This study examines the impact of post-harvest handling on the medicinal quality of enset, provides examples of homeopathic remedies, and presents data and reports on the efficacy of enset in treating common health conditions. The findings highlight the continued relevance of enset in local healthcare systems and its potential for modern therapeutic applications.
