Potential of homeopathy in gastrointestinal disorders: A focus on irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is disorders that significantly affects quality of life and hamper health status of suffer. Irritable bowel syndrome belongs to the category of gastrointestinal disorder with high prevalence in developing countries due to the poor socioeconomic status and unhygienic condition. The condition is characterized by discomfort, abdominal pain, irregular bowel habits and abdominal cramps in case of severe condition. Disturbed life style, poor dietary habits, irregular sleeping pattern, stress and poor hygiene, etc. are some major causes of IBS. Treatment involves lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments and medical therapy. Homeopathy as evidence based medical science offers individualized approach for the management of IBS based on the totality of symptoms. Homeopathic remedies such as Antimonium crudum, Argentum nitricum, Lycopodium clavatum, Natrum carbonicum, Nux vomica, Staphysagria, Sulphur and Pulsatilla nigricans, etc. can be used in such types of condition based on the prevalence of symptoms. The review explore role of homeopathy in managing IBS along with the medical perspectives of gastrointestinal disorder.
