Care burden perceived by mothers of children with developmental disabilities

Background: The WHO defines disability as loss of function at the level of the whole person, which may include inability to communicate or to perform mobility, activities of daily living, or necessary vocational or a vocational activities; rehabilitation is aimed at teaching patients to remediate or compensate and thus maximize functional independence.
Objective: Aim is to assess the care burden of mothers of children with developmental disabilities, their association with the socio demographic profile of the mothers and also the association with the illness profile of children.
Methods: we conducted a descriptive cross sectional study to assess the burden of 60 mothers of children with developmental disorder in Rotary Institute for Children In Need of Special Care at vazhuthccadu, Thiruvananthapuram using purposive convenient sampling technique. Study was assessed using Burden Assessment Schedule (BAS).
Results: This study contrasts the majority of published research, which indicates that parents from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, parents in prestigious occupations, parents with higher family incomes, and parents with different family types have greater care burdens., others educational status, number of children. This may be because the institution provided all necessary support for the parents in children’s different types of therapies, education and even they provided training for parents.
Conclusion: The care burden perceived by mothers of children with developmental disabilities have great association with the illness profile of the child mainly the type of disability than the mother’s demographic profiles.
