Abstract: The therapeutic potential of Datura stramonium (Stramonium) in managing various mental disorders is rooted in its rich historical and cultural use as well as its unique pharmacological profile. Known for its potent psychoactive properties, Stramonium has been used in diverse cultures for spiritual and medicinal purposes. This paper delves into Stramonium’s effects in treating conditions such as delirium, mania, schizophrenia, and other psychoses, focusing on its primary alkaloids: atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine, which alter neurotransmitter functions to produce hallucinogenic and anticholinergic effects. While Stramonium’s use in contemporary psychiatry remains controversial due to safety concerns, anecdotal and historical data suggest potential therapeutic benefits in select psychiatric cases. This paper aims to highlight Stramonium’s complex role in mental health treatment and underscores the need for further research to establish safe and effective clinical applications.
