Abstract:

Background: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that negatively impacts physical and mental health, as well as overall quality of life. Conventional treatments for insomnia often involve pharmacological interventions, which may lead to dependency and adverse effects. Homoeopathic medicines, based on individualized prescriptions, offer a holistic and safe alternative for managing insomnia.

Objective: This study aims to assess the role of homoeopathic medicines in treating the cases of insomnia.

Methods: A single arm, prospective interventional study was conducted over 40 patients with the symptoms of insomnia who are screened using DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. The cases fulfilling the Inclusion and exclusion criteria are enrolled in the study after taking patient’s written consent. The trial sample was calculated as 44 considering 10% dropouts. Each case was analyzed individually, and remedies were prescribed according to homoeopathic principles, considering the totality of the symptoms. The duration of this study is 12 months while the duration of treatment of each case is 3 months. Cases were assessed at the baseline using Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) to get the severity of the condition. Statistical test “paired-t test” is used for the statistical analysis.

Results: Four patients dropped out. Intention to treat sample (n = 40) was analyzed. 23 cases showed marked improvement with a decrement in severity of insomnia, 14 cases showed moderate improvement while 3 cases showed no improvement, suggesting the need for reassessment.

Conclusion: Individualized Homoeopathic medicine prescribed in accordance with Homoeopathic principles is successful in treating Insomnia and provides relief to the patient in a respectably short amount of time.
