The standard method of giving new-born infants the nutrients they require for appropriate growth and development is breastfeeding. With the right information and the help of their family, the healthcare system, and society at large, almost all moms are able to breastfeed. The WHO advises that colostrum, the yellowish, sticky breast milk produced at the end of pregnancy, is the ideal diet for the new-born and that feeding should begin within the first hour of the baby's birth. Up until six months of age, exclusive breastfeeding is advised. After then, breastfeeding should be continued for at least two years, along with suitable supplemental foods.
