Abstract:

Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder globally. It is characterized by a deficiency in the production of thyroid hormones. This condition can lead to behavioral issues and symptoms of depression. Hypothyroidism stems from low thyroid hormone levels, which can arise from a variety of causes and result in different manifestations. Changes in thyroid function may greatly impact mental health, affecting emotions and cognitive abilities. The disorder exhibits a broad range of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including both anxiety and depression.

The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) is used for diagnosing depression and other mental health disorders frequently seen in primary care settings. This study aimed to investigate the impact of individualized homeopathic treatments on managing depression in individuals with hypothyroidism. Thirty participants diagnosed with hypothyroidism, aged 18 to 45 years, were recruited from the outpatient department of Dr. Padiar Memorial Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital between December 2022 and June 2023. The study was observational and utilized the PHQ-9 (translated Malayalam version) as the primary outcome measure, assessed at one-month intervals.

Following the administration of individualized homeopathic treatments, notable improvements were observed in the PHQ-9 scores and blood TSH levels among patients with both hypothyroidism and depression.
