Abstract:

The case report contributes to the evidence supporting the role of individualized homeopathic management in pediatric Irritable Bowel Syndrome, with a focus on integrating psychological and gastrointestinal symptoms using standardized assessment tools. It highlights the clinical utility of the Rome IV diagnostic criteria and the Numerical Rating Scale in guiding diagnosis and monitoring treatment outcomes in children.
A ten-year-old male presented with recurrent cramping abdominal pain, frequent loose stools, and anticipatory anxiety before exams, suppressed anger, ailment from long standing grief and disturbed sleep. On clinical examination, mild abdominal tenderness and audible bowel sounds were noted. The diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome was established using the Rome IV diagnostic criteria, with the patient's stool pattern predominantly matching Type 6 on the Bristol Stool Form Scale. An individualized homeopathic prescription was selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of physical symptoms and emotional characteristics.
Symptom progression was monitored over several follow-ups using the Numerical Rating Scale, which allowed for objective assessment of pain intensity, stool frequency, anxiety levels, and sleep quality. Over a period of five months, a gradual and sustained improvement was observed across all parameters, with reduction in abdominal pain, normalization of bowel habits, and improved emotional stability and sleep.
This case emphasizes the importance of a Bio-Psycho-Social, individualized approach in managing pediatric Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It also demonstrates the value of applying structured tools like the Rome IV criteria for accurate diagnosis and the Numerical Rating Scale for consistent follow-up. Combining the individualized therapeutic interventions with standardized clinical frameworks enhances both the effectiveness and the scientific rigor of pediatric case management in functional gastrointestinal disorders.
