Abstract:

Acute respiratory illnesses are a significant global health challenge, especially in low- and middle-income countries. These conditions, ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases like bronchitis and pneumonia, affect individuals of all age groups. This observational study aims to explore the environmental, lifestyle-related, and individual factors contributing to ARIs, particularly among those seeking homoeopathic treatment. The study was conducted at Sarada Krishna Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, involving 60 patients of various ages and backgrounds. Environmental triggers such as cold exposure (e.g., drenching in rain, cold drinks, and food) and sudden weather changes were the most common causative factors. Acute bronchitis was the most prevalent ARI diagnosed, followed by acute rhinitis and tonsillitis. A higher incidence of ARIs was observed in females, and the age group 1-20 years exhibited the highest vulnerability. Geographically, Kulasekharam showed the highest incidence of ARIs, indicating possible local environmental influences. Homoeopathic remedies like Pulsatilla nigricans, Bryonia alba, and Arsenicum album were frequently prescribed, with the majority of patients responding well to remedies in the 200th potency. This study underscores the importance of understanding the environmental and lifestyle factors contributing to ARIs and supports homoeopathic treatment as a viable option in managing acute respiratory conditions. Further research with larger sample sizes and controlled studies is recommended to substantiate the efficacy of homoeopathic treatments in ARI management.
