The potential neurobiological mechanisms of homeopathic medicines in the treatment of depression: A narrative review
Sreya N and Mrinal A Nerlekar
Depression is a major concern to the global burden of disease. Even though there are numerous advancements in pharmacotherapy, many patients do not benefit from them or even experience adverse effects. Homeopathy is often helpful for the treatment of mental health conditions, including depression, but its biological mechanisms are not understood well. This narrative review aims to explore how homeopathic medicines influence the neurobiological pathways related to depression. The discussion includes nanoparticle theory, stress modulation via the HPA axis, neurotransmitter regulation, gene expression, and psychoneuroimmunological effects. Bridging classical homeopathic principles by understanding how homeopathic remedies work scientifically (like affecting brain chemicals, gene expression, or inflammation) and combining this understanding with traditional homeopathic knowledge will create better and more holistic ways to care and treat people with depression. This review provides insights and perspectives for integrative mental healthcare approach.
