Homeopathic therapeutics for chronic cough in adults and children: A review
Akash Dwivedi
Background: Chronic cough is defined as a cough lasting more than 8 weeks in adults or more than 4 weeks in children. It is not only a symptom but a sign of underlying chronic pathology ranging from postnasal drip and asthma to GERD and chronic infections. While conventional treatment focuses on suppressing the symptom, homeopathy aims at addressing the root cause with individualized, holistic prescriptions.
Objective: To review key homeopathic remedies used in the treatment of chronic cough in both adults and children, detailing their indications and clinical relevance based on classical materia medica and modern literature.
Method: This review is based on a qualitative analysis of classical homeopathic texts (Boericke, Kent, Clarke, Allen), repertorial references, and clinical observations. Remedies were selected for inclusion based on frequency of use, depth of action, and success in treating various forms of chronic cough.
Conclusion: Homeopathy offers safe and effective management for chronic cough in both children and adults, with remedies selected based on the totality of symptoms and individual constitution. Medicines such as Drosera rotundifolia, Spongia tosta, Pulsatilla, and Ipecacuanha demonstrate strong clinical utility. Homeopathic therapeutics also help reduce the tendency for recurrence, addressing deeper susceptibilities and promoting long-term health.
