Abstract:

Background: Urticaria, commonly referred to as hives, is a dermatological condition characterized by sudden, transient, itchy wheals on the skin, often triggered by allergens, stress, or idiopathic causes. While conventional medicine offers symptomatic relief, homeopathy emphasizes individualized remedy selection based on the totality of symptoms and especially on modalities the conditions under which symptoms aggravate or ameliorate.

Objective: To analyze the role of modalities in the selection of homeopathic remedies for urticaria through repertorial references, and to identify the most frequently indicated medicines for various modal presentations.

Method: A repertorial study was conducted using prominent homeopathic repertories, including Kent’s Repertory, Boenninghausen’s Therapeutic Pocket Book, and Synthesis Repertory. Rubrics related to urticaria and its modalities (aggravation or amelioration by temperature, time, food, contact, etc.) were explored. A list of frequently indicated remedies was compiled based on the presence and intensity of modalities.

Conclusion: Modalities serve as crucial differentiators in selecting the simillimum in cases of urticaria. Remedies such as Apis mellifica, Urtica urens, Rhus toxicodendron, Sulphur, and Dulcamara were frequently found in rubric cross-referencing. A repertorial approach grounded in modal differentiation ensures more precise prescribing and better therapeutic outcomes in homeopathic management of urticaria.
