Priti and Anil Aggarwal
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a common condition affecting women of reproductive age, characterized by a range of physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms that occur cyclically during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and resolve with the onset of menstruation. The exact etiology remains unclear but is believed to involve hormonal fluctuations, particularly in estrogen and progesterone, and neurotransmitter imbalances such as serotonin. Symptoms may include mood swings, irritability, bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, and changes in appetite or sleep patterns. Diagnosis is clinical, often based on symptom patterns recorded over two or more menstrual cycles. Management involves a combination of lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, stress reduction, and, in some cases, pharmacological or complementary therapies. A holistic and individualized approach is essential for effective symptom control and improving quality of life in affected individuals.
