Background and objective: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition which is defined as backflow of gastric content into the esophagus which causes troublesome symptoms and other complications. It is mainly characterised by heartburn and regurgitation. The sensation of discomfort or burning behind the sternum is known as heartburn, whereas regurgitation is defined as return of gastric content into the mouth or hypopharynx. Obesity, alcohol consumption, lack of regular exercise are some of the lifestyle risk factors that may contribute to GERD symptoms.
Aims and objective: To study the effectiveness of homoeopathic medicines in managing the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease in adults.
Material and method: This is a prospective, observational study conducted at Government Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Bhopal, (M.P.). Data were collected after obtaining written consent from 40 patients. GERD Q tool was used for the assessment of GERD. After detailed interview of the patient, the questionnaire is filled up. The remedy was chosen according to the principles of Homoeopathy based on the totality of each case and was evaluated and repertorized using synthesis repertory in RADAR OPUS software. Scores were collected before and after the treatment following evaluation of each patient. The statistical analysis was done using student paired t test.
Result: 40 patients were enrolled in the study. Out of 40 patients, 19 were male and 21 were female. The mean age in this study was 35.45. The frequently prescribed medicines in this study were Nux vomica, Lycopodium and Natrum Muriaticum. Statistically significant difference was found in pre and post treatment GERD Q tool score (p<0.05).
Conclusion: This study provides statistically significant evidence of reduction in GERD Q tool score before and after treatment with homoeopathic medicines strictly given according to homoeopathic principles which shows the effectiveness of homoeopathic medicines in the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease in adults.
