AR Thushara and Jeesper Susan John SR
This prospective study evaluated the effectiveness of individualized homoeopathic medicines in managing osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in the geriatric population. Conducted over six months at the Government Homoeopathic Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, 30 patients aged 60-85 years with clinically and radiographically confirmed OA knee were enrolled. Treatment was tailored according to homoeopathic principles, and outcomes were assessed using the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) questionnaire. Significant improvements were observed in pain, stiffness, symptoms, and daily living functions, with total KOOS scores shifting from predominantly very severe to moderate or mild levels. Quality of life also improved from very severe to severe in most cases. Common remedies included Medorrhinum, Lachesis, Rhus toxicodendron, Bryonia alba, Pulsatilla, and Sulphur in various potencies. The findings suggest that homoeopathic medicines can provide safe, effective, and holistic management of OA knee in elderly patients, improving functional outcomes and overall well-being without adverse effects.
