Abstract:

Background: Women are more susceptible to motion sickness than men, women show a higher incidence of vomiting and report a higher incidence of symptoms such as nausea. Motion sickness is rare below the age of 2 years, but there after susceptibility increases to reach at peak between the ages of 4 and 12 years. With increasing age, sensitivity declines further. Motion sickness is a condition characterized by pallor, nausea, and vomiting.

Aim: This study intends to assess the efficacy of homoeopathic medicine in the management of motion sickness.

Methodology: The study design was a prospective, single blind randomized control study conducted in the year 2023. A total of 40 cases were enrolled from the study site after screening. They were assigned to two groups i.e., experimental group (n=20) and placebo control group (n=20). The experimental group was given homoeopathic medicines whereas the placebo control group received placebo. The changes in the symptoms of motion sickness were evaluated by using the Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire (MSAQ), wherein MSAQ scores were calculated before and after travelling. This study was carried out for duration of 6 months.

Results: Females are more prone to motion sickness than males and the incidence is largely seen in the age group ranging 20-28 years. Paired t-test was applied to this study and it was found statistically substantial (p<0.0001). Cocculus and Phosphorous were the most commonly prescribed remedies. Arsenicum album and Lycopodium were also prescribed frequently in many cases. Sulphur, Lachesis, Petroleum, Sepia, Glonoine and Ipecac were the least prescribed remedies.

Conclusion: Homoeopathic remedies were found effective in the management of motion sickness in this study. Further, more studies with a larger sample size can be conducted.
