Role of homoeopathy in management of chronic pain & joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA): A case-based observation
Thimeshwari Meshram and Juhi Gupta
A chronic, progressive autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) primarily affects synovial joints and causes long lasting inflammation, pain, swelling, stiffness, and gradual joint destruction. The condition is frequently worse in the morning and after periods of inactivity. A increasing interest in complementary therapy approaches has resulted from the fact that many patients still endure functional disability and limits in their everyday activities, even with advancements in traditional management. As a comprehensive medical approach, homeopathy places a strong emphasis on customized treatment plans based on the patient's overall symptomology and symptom similarities. We report the case of a 50-year-old female who presented with pain, swelling, and marked stiffness of both knees associated with fixed flexion deformity and severe restriction of movement, with aggravation noted particularly in cold wet weather. Laboratory investigations revealed raised ESR and a positive rheumatoid factor, while radiological findings confirmed narrowing of the joint space. Based on the totality of symptoms, Rhus toxicodendron was prescribed. During the course of treatment, the patient demonstrated gradual and sustained improvement in joint mobility, with a reduction in pain and stiffness, and a follow up prescription of Calcarea carbonica helped maintain improvement and address constitutional tendencies. This article highlights the scope of homoeopathy in the management of RA, with special reference to its role in chronic pain and joint inflammation, supported by a case-based observation.
