Historical and homoeopathic perspectives on constitution
VM Priyadarshini and M Murugan
The word "constitution," which comes from the Latin constituere, which means "to establish or form," describes a person's innate physical and mental traits that are influenced by their genetic makeup and affect their temperament, health, and propensity for disease. The beliefs of Hippocrates, Paracelsus, and later Hahnemann led to the development of typologies in the past, which connected humors, temperaments, and disease dispositions to physical constitutions. Seasons, elemental characteristics, and particular tendencies were linked to the four Hippocratic temperaments: choleric, melancholy, phlegmatic, and sanguine. According to ancient perspectives, temperaments such as bilious, sanguine, phlegmatic, and neurotic defined physical and psychological characteristics, emphasizing the mutual interaction of mind and body.
